Abstract

The "Restaurare sott’acqua"
project will celebrate its twenty-
fifth anniversary in 2026.
Roberto Petriaggi, underwater
archaeologist at the ICR
and director of the Underwater
Archaeology Intervention
Unit, conceived and led the
project until his retirement in
2010. He developed a visionary
vision: to restore underwater
archaeological heritage in
situ, respecting the principles
of sustainability, replicability,
and reversibility. To this end,
he formed a multidisciplinary
research group—comprising archaeologists,
restorers, biologists,
chemists, physicists, and
others—that developed and
directly tested innovative methods
and tools for underwater
restoration. Following Petriaggi's
retirement in 2011, the
project was led by this author,
who promoted its internationalization
by encouraging the
sharing of restoration methodologies
and techniques with
other research groups, both in
Italy and abroad, as part of various
European projects.
