Abstract

Rome Technopole (RT) is Italy's largest innovation ecosystem, established on 8 June 2022 as a Foundation of Participation under PNRR Mission 4, Component 2, Investment 1.5 (ECS_00000024). With 110 M€ of MUR funding and a total programme cost of 121.5 M€, it brings together 53 partners - 10 universities, 7 public research bodies and 36 private companies - in three strategic areas: energy transition, digital transition, and health & biopharma. Eight vertical Flagship Projects (FP1-8), each led by an industrial partner (ENI, Coima, MAIRE/Sapienza, Confindustria Dispositivi Medici, Leonardo, Thales Alenia Space, Takis Biotech, UniCredit), are supported by six functional Spokes (applied research, tech transfer, university education, vocational education, public engagement, open research infrastructure). The article describes the Hub & Spoke model, the daily realities of academic-industrial collaboration, the formation mission, the planned Pietralata campus (a Positive Energy Building integrated with hydrogen, geothermal and solar), and the open question of institutional sustainability beyond 2026.
