Abstract

Flagship Project 3 of the Rome Technopole ecosystem, led by Sapienza Università di Roma with partners Tor Vergata, Roma Tre, Cassino, Tuscia, LUISS, UCBM, CNR (academic) and ACEA, Almaviva (industrial), addresses digital transition for waste decarbonisation and recycling. Its fourteen research lines span five clusters:

- AI and digital tools for waste characterisation and pre-sorting;
- digital traceability (Digital Product Passport, smart labels, plastic credits
blockchain);
- Thermochemical process modelling (gasification, pyrolysis, green chemistry);
- Critical raw materials recovery and polyester chemical recycling;
- Environmental monitoring including nanopowder surveillance and electrochemical water treatment.

The article discusses each cluster's scientific content, key results (Plasmix digital twin, PET recycling pilot at Roma Tre, battery-free NFC sensors at Tor Vergata, real-time nanopowder monitoring at Cassino), the EU regulatory context (ESPR, CRMA, IED revision) and the open challenge of building circular district governance.
