Abstract

Flagship Project 5 of the Rome Technopole ecosystem, led by Leonardo (coordinator: Filippo De Stefani) with partners Sapienza, Tor Vergata, Tuscia, Roma Tre, Cassino, CNR and Airbus Italia, MBDA Italia, addresses digital transition through four research lines at different technology readiness levels:

(1) AESA radar - micro-Doppler drone classification, MIMO architectures, monopulse DoA estimation and FPGA validation (EuRAD 2024, IRC 2024, IRS 2025);

(2) quantum cryptography - QKD with BB84 and free-space optical channels
at Sapienza (Sciarrino group), and the Olivier post-quantum algorithm
based on multivariate cryptography (Cassino, Corbo group);

(3) AI for satellite and maritime imagery - super-resolution (StableShip-SR, MWT-Diff, ResQu) and multimodal translation (StawGAN, IR to RGB);

(4) terahertz devices - graphene-based reconfigurable metasurfaces and components at CNR-IMM, reconfigurable metasurfaces at Roma Tre (Bilotti group).

The article includes direct quotes from key researchers from the RAI Play video (Ep. 9) and discusses the dual-use governance challenge in PNRR-funded research with defence industry partners.
