Abstract

Flagship Project 1 of the Rome Technopole ecosystem, led by ENI (coordinator: Juan Andres Buonadonna), addresses decarbonisation and digitalisation in green energy research across five synergistic themes:

(1) renewable energy conversion - green hydrogen via electrolysis, electrocatalysis and biofuels, AI/ML-managed REC grids, CAES, Dye Solar Cells + INFINITY storage, HESS metal hydride systems;

(2) graphene - perovskite solar cells via printing processes with green solvents (CNR-ISM, Di Carlo and Triolo), graphene-coated electrical cables for thermal management (Cassino), graphene-green training with AI and VR (Ucciardello);

(3) carbon capture - accelerated mineral carbonation of industrial residues for CO2 sequestration and critical
material recovery (Tor Vergata, Costa/Masi);

(4) biomass valorisation - NADES solvents, biochar production via pyrolysis;

(5) energy storage - HESS systems for REC, nuclear fusion retrofit of existing coal/fission plants (Tuscia, Facci/Fama).

Published outputs include studies in Journal of Cleaner Production (2023) and Energies (2023). The unifying application scenario is the Renewable Energy Community, with the Joint Lab at ENI Gazometro Ostiense as the physical integration
testbed.
